WIP - Late Roman Archers

Late last month, I engaged in a bloody battle in the east—my Age of Invasions Late Roman warband took on Helge’s formidable Sassanids. The Eastern Hordes ultimately claimed victory, but it was a fantastic game nonetheless. Sadly, my grand plans to open a "Fast Elephant BBQ" franchise were soundly thwarted.

That match made one thing abundantly clear: my warband was desperately lacking long-range firepower. To fix the issue, I placed an order with Wargames Foundry on August 21st. Just one week later, on the 28th, two packs of LR019 - Late Roman Archers arrived at my doorstep—giving me enough figures to field two full units of Warriors. Excellent service, as always!

Haystacks and Late Roman Archers are prepped

Yesterday on my Discord Paint & Chat channel, I worked on the archers and a Stone Animal Enclosure. The enclosure was a cheap resin piece I snagged from Warlord Games just to pad my order for cheaper shipping.

Late Roman Cavalry

This unit was also painted as an entry in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, as well as to provide some much needed troops for my Late Roman Saga Warband. It consists of a Warlord with a Draco bannerman and a 8 man Warrior Unit. This was the project that was start and go in the middle of the night during the long winter season. I am afraid I am of an age where getting up in the middle of the night, and being awake for a couple of hours is quite common.  A good time to paint.

I purchased an unpainted Arthurian warband second hand in 2024. However it came without any horses for the calvary. I had tried various solutions including some Persian plastic horses that I had stored away but nothing meant with my satisfaction. In the end since the figures originated with Gripping Beast I wrote to the source and inquired if they could sell me the horses separately. Loki from the Beast responded positvely.

Late Roman Levy - Slingers

This project began on Thursday evening after I signed off work and was intented as an entry in the recent Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. Twelve Late Roman slingers, or a Saga Levy. The work was completed in 15 stage, at all hours of the day or night. From the first application of paint applied to the trousers (AV Game Color 72.037 Filthy Brown to the final stage of a coat of Mod Podge applied to provide a sealant for the Meadows of Purity Krautcover Scenics. I just wanted to see if I could push it throught in about 60 hours.

28mm SAGA Age of Invasions - Romans

The next Saga night in Montreal is Jan 22nd at the Abyss and one of the themes is Age of Invasions. These troops were painted by Garry of the Scarlet Lancer Painting Service late in 2024. They have yet to surface on the tabletop. When I asked him to paint the figures I ensured that the units had enough figures to be included in either a Lion Rampant  or Dragon Rampant game (12 figure units vs 8 figure for Saga).

12 Man Levy Archers

12 Man Levy Javelin Unit, 2 units of Warriors (12 figures available for each)

Some Late Roman Artilley I painted years ago

In the box I stll have two more units to paint. one unit of Levy Slingers and one unit of Archers. I suspect these will be good candidates for the current Analogure Hobbies Painting Challenge.
