The Court of Sinister Doctor Koo

This is my second straight entry using figures from Pulp Figures China Station catalogue. PCS-01 The Court of Sinister Doctor Koo, or as advertized The Greatest Criminal Mastermind of the Far-East, perhaps the world! Definately an entry for any sort of foray into the world of pulp.

Pulp Figures - Chinese Porters

I am a fan of Bob Murch's Pulp Figures. This was 3 packs of  PCS-09 Chinese Bearers from his China Station range. It was intented to be completed as part of the  Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge but due to time constraits it wasn't finished in time. They are intented to serve as for a backdrop for Daredevil Adventures taking place in China of the Warring Warlords period.  Ideas flow, a party of porters hired by a scientific expedition, a forced work gang for a local warlord, or dockhands on a river side seaport.

I choose to work on these figures as I completed the Sampan. I figured a work crew unloading the boat was a great combination. I also tried something a little different with some of the bases. The other night I saw a Youtube video where it was suggested using cut up stir sticks to provide a wooden planking on the base. I applied this effect to approximately six figures to create the impression that they are engaged in work on a wooden wharf or pier.

I also completed a separate barbarian warrior miniature. I'm unsure of its origin, but it was a slot-a-base mini. I wanted to experiment by clipping it off at the soles of the feet to see how it would attach to a base. The inspiration came from the concept of mounting figures on clear bases. Although I didn’t have any clear bases at hand, I was eager to test how straightforward the process would be.

And he appears to be missing a hand.

25mm Sampan - Floating Down the Yellow River

This was a Sampan from Sarissa Precision that I picked up a while ago. Last night I decided I to try out some water effects. A layer of fine sand texture paint, painted with inexpensive Dollarstore DecoArt Acrylic paints. First a Copenhagen Blue, followed by Tropical Blue, finally topped with Sea Spray. I recently received two 1/2400 Fleets from Tumbling Dice and was thinking about the bases upon which the ships will nest.

I also dug out 4 packs of Pulp Figures, part of the China Station Line. They will be my next entry into the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge.

SAGA - Objective Markers

These are some objective markers that I painted up for possible use at the Montreal Saga Grand Melee event being held this upcoming Saturday (Nov 22nd). Three of them are the set FMT4 Hidden Lairs which I purchase from North Star Military Figures. The fourth was part of Bob Murch's the Masters of Devil Reef. They are part of the Cthulhu 28s Line and was included with the Kickstarter campaign. It may be available on its own but I do not know if that is the case or not. A sample archer from Claymore Castings is included for scale.

Pulp Figures - Assorted Miniatures

I am a fan of the figures produced by Bob Murch. Here is a sample of some recent figures of his that I have worked upon.  The first is Col Muzzy Bluderbooch. The figure is the 2021  Bob Murch's Movember Fund Raiser

 Col Muzzy Bluderbooch

From the Mystery and Horror line in the Pulp Figures Catalogue we have PMH 11 Triumph of Frankenstein! The Baron has unleashed his terrible creation! Or as I like to say,

the good doctor at work

And finally , available from Crucible Crush Miniatures we have the Masters of Devil Reef. They are part of the Cthulhu 28s Line. These figures were sculpted by Bob and were a Kickstarter that I backed.

Bonus Selection

These figures are not part of Bob Murch's work, but they are definitely pulp. They are part of the A Fistful Of Kung Fu Line by North Star Military Figures. North Star is also the source of  Pulp Figures available directly in the UK. The following figures are  AFOKF03 - Kung Fu Squad: The Demons

1066 Saxon Kickstarter

In May 2021 I backed Bob Murch's (Pulp Figures) 1066 Saxon Kickstarter in conjunction with Crucible Crush Miniatures. I selected the Saxon Raiders Pledge. They were purchased in order to build a SAGA army. I received my rewards last October. Thanks to the glorious autumn in Montreal  I was able to prep most of the selection before the weather turned.

These were also entered into the AHPC XIII. I have been under the weather the last 2 weeks and my productivity has hit a brick wall.

Two units are ready, in addition to the villagers I posted last week.

Unit Number 1 - Foot Command - 5 figures

Unit Number 2 - Dane Axes - 5 figures

A Hodgepodge of Figures

These figures were an entry in the AHPC from last week, but I must have missed the deadline and they were never posted. My posting day is Wednesday

1) Party of Adventurers

This is a group of travelling Clerics with a Magic User accompanied by a mule train of supplies and trade goods. The mules came from my mountain of lead, while the adventurers were part of a gift of figures given to me this pass summer when I visited Nova Scotia.

2) Villagers exercising their right to vote.

These three figures were part of the package of figures I was gifted on my travels. With torch and pitchfork they seem intent on removing a local bigwig.

3) Two of the 1066 peasant Women and Children figures I received as part of Bob Murch's 1066 Saxon Kickstarter in conjunction with Crucible Crush Miniatures.

4) The final figure is Gollum, as offered by Harlequin Miniatures when they held the licence to produce LOTR figures.

PCS - 2 The Palanquin of Dr. Koo

More Pulp Figures from the China Station line. Dr. Koo is on the road carried by his trusty porters and accompanied by his bodyguard. Some will wonder why he does not wear the orange robes of state. Many will ponder the meaning of the blue dragon on the back of his exposed chair. Those taking part in my Daredevils Campaign will have an inkling.

PCS 15 - Tong Warriors w/ Assorted Weapons #1

I think I have make it clear that I am a fanboy of the Pulp Figures line. I have purchased most of the China Station packages. This post is of 3 packs of  PCS 15 - Tong Warriors w/ Assorted Weapons #1.

I have painted 3 identical figures in uniform colours.

They will provide a bodyguard for Dr Koo. (PCS - 2 The Palanquin of Dr. Koo). Dr Koo's bearers will also wear the same colours, but this group of figures is not ready.

Arcane Academics - A Simple Wooden Goblet

My 2nd offering from Bob Murch's Arcane Academics is that of PMH-5, Shrine of the Grail. In keeping with the homage that the shrine seems to be inspired by, I painted the goblet as a simple wooden drinking cup. I still have to master keeping my painting within the lines provided.

Arcane Academics - One Damned Thing After Another

In the past and not so distance past I ran a Daredevils Campaign. Pulp stories inspired by the serials of the 30s and 40s, played as reruns on Saturday morning, or after school TV in my youth, or the magazines and paperbacks from the Golden Age of the Pulp Fiction, that were the readily available for purchase with the money earned on my paper route.

Bob Murch's Pulp Figures is an excellent source of 28mm figures for adventure gaming of the interwar period. I'm a big fan and have been hording his figures for a while. I really need to get more of them  painted and onto a tabletop.

PMH-6 The Alter of Evil
I backed Bob Murch's Arcane Academics project through Kickstarter and have painted my first offering, PMH-6. The Alter of Evil provides the GM (me), a vehicle to introduce creatures from beyond our plane of existence into the game. The one shown in the photo below has been sitting so long in my pile of lead, I know not, what it is nor from whence it came. If anyone can identify the figure please let me know. Until then I am just going to refer to it as "One Damned Thing", and I guarantee in a gaming situation it will lead to another.

Below is my interpretation of the Alter of Evil, complete with its golden idol and IMO a misguided and most likely lost soul.
